Prairie Underground: Bringing Form and Function to Winter, Without Compromising on ‘Footprint’

Jute and Jackfruit’s lastest eco-fashion designer to join the ‘family’ is well known female design team: Prairie Underground. We are very excited to bring Prairie into our boutique as another very compelling, contemporary, and sustainably-minded design label. Jute and Jackfruit’s winter 2009- 2010 collection is a precursor to Spring, in which we will bring Prairie into our boutique with even larger presence (stay tuned!).

All Prairie’s wears are designed, cut and sewn in Seattle, WA by a dynamic team of two women (couldn’t be more aligned with Jute and Jackfruit’s mission), 100% Made in the USA. What’s more, all the fabrics provide comfort, softness, ease-of-maintenance (no dry cleaning required) and are made from 100% certified organic cotton.

Prairie outfits are easily worn from morning to night, dressed up with accessories (such as the hand knit flower pin by Indigenous Designs, featured below), to a handbag, or maybe even an Escama Brooch, the clothing provides a beautiful, design-savvy palatte for you to dress up or down with your own personal style.

One of my personal favorites is this season’s Long Cloak Hoodie in Midnight (pictured above). This coat-dress is a longstanding classic by Prairie. We are now carrying it in their new Midnight color for winter. As a dark navy, this midnight color is a dark neutral with just enough splash to brighten your outfit. Special features of this classic are the puff shoulders, ruched front pockets, and incredible hood (styled like a Renaissance cloak hoodie with a modern flare). Pair this organic cotton hoodie with leggings, denim, pants, you name it….along with boots, heels, flats, whichever suits your mood. The indoor or outdoor coat-top is very versatile, flattering on so many different body types and definitely unique (not to mention comfortable!).

Another stellar item in the new collection is the organic cotton Orbit Top (pictured left). This tunic top (or short dress) can be worn over leggings, pants, a skirt, or nothing at all! Compelling features include the two front pockets and  the dangling cowl neck which can be worn straight around the neck, over one shoulder, or even over the head (as a hoodie). Add a pin to this outfit, such as the Indigenous flower pin below and you have a perfectly styled, comfortable outfit for day or night.

Looking for that perfect base layer that you can also wear as a standalone? The organic cotton Bustier Tee (pictured left) fits just that bill. With heart shaped seams around the bust and two ovals on either side of the hips, this top, which is long enough to tuck in or wear out with another layer, is soft, fitted, and beautifully cut to optimize your flattering lines. The color is a soft eggplant, known as bruise. Made from 100% cotton, this styled shirt is a steal at $82 (which includes shipping). The Bustier Tee is easily paired with the Orbit top as well (especially for colder days). Each piece is in the same bruise color.

If you like the unique, feminine lines and sheer comfort of the Long Cloak Hoodie, you will also love the shorter cousin: the Organic Cotton Black Cloak Hoodie (pictured below).
