We have taken the time to answer these questions ourselves from our company’s perspective to start the dialogue. We look forward to hearing your responses, too!

Jute and Jackfruit’s Responses by Owner Shana Yansen. Starting with the last question first, Earth Month is important for me and for Jute and Jackfruit not only because it is a celebration of the passion and commitment behind our company—protecting the earth and its natural resources, but also because it provides an opportunity for us to evaluate what we are doing to achieve success as an environmentally conscious business and what we can do better.

I am a strong believer in valuing key natural resources that are part of our daily lives. Two elements that stand out for me are air and water.  I’d like to highlight these two crucial resources because they are so often under-appreciated. Why? Perhaps in part perhaps because we have such easy access to them and assume them to be free (or nearly free) in unlimited quantity.

Water as you know, is one of the most fundamental elements in Nature and the basis for life. As Wikipedia notes, “is vital for all forms of life”. Personally, I drink a lot of water every day and I use it in so many ways, as I am sure you do, too. Whether it be showering, washing dishes, doing laundry, watering plants or other…it is essential to my and most people’s existence. On a daily basis though, I, perhaps I like many others, take this resource for granted and so would like to take a moment this month to appreciate this precious resource. Of the many places I have been and/or lived around the world, many do not have access to water, let alone fresh (potable) water. To have ready access to it here in the US (and the Boston area to be specific) for free in many public places and at minimal cost at households, is of great value. Protecting its purity and health is an investment I favor. As someone who is about to bring a child into this world, I want to make sure our waterways are protected so that my child as well as the millions of other children across the globe continue to have access to fresh water for their entire lifetime and for generations to come.

Air. Another biggie for me is air. According to Wikipedia, air means Earth’s atmosphere. It is a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen and a few other gases. Without the oxygen in air, we would not be here today nor could we survive if somehow it left the atmosphere. Oxygen is absorbed in our lungs and then we exhale carbon dioxide. Plants and animals are also dependent on oxygen and air more broadly. Now that the Spring birds are out and warm weather emerging, its easy to appreciate fresh air. Out on a walk, it can be so invigorating. Again like water, when I lived and/or traveled in other parts of the world where the air is more contaminated, I have come to appreciate the air here the Boston area. Not to say that our air is the freshest here in MA (it could be better!), but compared to other places on earth, it is indeed much cleaner and crisper, not to mention invigorating on a beautiful day. As far as pollution goes, whether it be carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxides, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, CFCs, VOCs or other substances, air pollution has led to and/or contributed to so many modern day public health and environmental issues, including but not limited to climate change, asthma, skin irritations, bronchial infections and more. In fact, about 4 percent of deaths in the United States can be attributed to air pollution, according to the Environmental Science Engineering Program at the Harvard School of Public Health as noted on Wikipedia on Air Pollution. Clearly, protecting our air, and not just our water, is another important area for environmental investment and commitment. We here at Jute and Jackfruit are committed to this both directly and indirectly through our business.

Re-affirming Our Commitment to the Environment: As part Earth Month, I’d like to take stock of Jute and Jackfruit’s commitment to the environment both through our eco-fashion boutique as well as through our investments in environmental organizations. In addition, I would like to see what we can do better. As part of Jute and Jackfruit’s mission, we believe not only in running our business with strong environmental principles and commitment to conservation, recycling and earth-friendly operations, but we also measure our success by what we give back to the environment. Along these lines, our commitment to One Percent for the Planet represents part of this investment. This year, we donated to the Mass Chapter of the Nature Conservancy as well as the Mass Climate Action Network. We believe that running a holistic, ethical and environmentally-conscious business is not enough in this day and age. So much damage has been done and is being done on a daily basis, that as a responsible business, we want to go beyond our immediate sphere of influence and contribute to making change through organizations that are solely devoted to environmental conservation, education and advocacy. This is why we are are a part of One Percent for the Planet.

Here is a glimpse at what Jute and Jackfruit is doing to limit our environmental footprint:

  • - Fabric Sourcing: we are committed to eco-friendly and sustainable fabrics such as organic cotton, hemp, organic wool, recycled fabrics, mill-ends, Tencel and soy. We are always keeping our eyes out for more innovations on eco-fabrics to add to our repertoire.
  • - Eco-fashion Designer Selection: beyond fabrics, we are commitment to independent and emerging designers that are committed to the environment and sustainability beyond fabrics. We look to partner with designers that use recycled packaging, that minimize their footprint and that are also committed to ethical principles in their production.
  • - Eco-friendly Packaging and Paper Products: we recycle everything that we can recycle and re-use cardboard boxes all the time. We ship with recycled cardboard boxes whenever possible, and when we need to buy new packaging materials we buy post-consumer recycled paper products as well as Mohawk paper. We also buy biodegradable plastic garment bags.
  • - Electricity: We pay a premium on our electricity to have it generated through Wind power.
  • - Carbon off-setting: when we go to shows outside of MA, we offset our carbon footprint.
  • - Education/Awareness Raising: We try to spread the word about the importance of eco-friendly textiles and apparel production through our blogs and community outreach. We love speaking on panels, at schools and being a part of eco-events to help raise awareness on these issues and increase demand for eco-conscious and ethically made products.

What We Want to Do Better

(1) Next year, we would like to explore extending carbon offsetting to other parts of our business.

(2) We would also like to increase our commitment to and investment in environmental organizations through our One Percent for the Planet membership.

(3) Education. Though we are already committed to this, much, much more needs to be done and we want to continue to spread the word through our friends, customers and communities in which Jute and Jackfruit is a part.

So now it’s your turn, we want to hear from you. What are you doing, now, what do you want to do better and why is Earth Month important to you. Tell us your thoughts and the lucky winners will win beautiful eco-friendly and fashion conscious clothing items!

2) What you would like to do better (starting this month!)
I’m actually starting to recycle organics and I’ve been a volunteer for my community for 2 years now.
I got some of my friends into the habit, and now I’m getting more friends.

My name is Nancy Nguyen
and I want to make a difference.
My email is nannceewinn@yahoo.com

(1) My husband and I recycle, and we try to use as little electricity as possible. Which means that even though we live in the South, we try to get by on as little air conditioning as we can.

(2) I’d like for us to start using our recycled grocery bags instead of the plastic ones at the regular grocery store or the paper ones at Whole Foods.

Earth Day/Earth Month is important to me as a proud Wisconsinite because our great former US senator, Gaylord Nelson, founded Earth Day as a means of educating the public about the need for greater environmental awareness and stewardship. In the 40 years since the first Earth Day, great obstacles still stand in the way of keeping our one and only Earth healthy. Yes, it’s just one day….but think of what each of us could accomplish by adopting the concepts of Earth Day in our lives: a cleaner, healthier, beautiful environment–our HOME!

LilyApril 4th, 2010 at 8:50 pm

What you are currently doing to reduce your environmental or carbon footprint in your daily life? I have been recycling paper for ages, but finally started recycling cardboard, plastic, and glass. All natural waste is composted in the garden to reduce the amount of methane in dumps. I also make sure to get almost 100% of my clothing from thrift stores. Without having the funds to make drastic changes in the construction of the home. I try to make sure most everything else I do is as green as possible.

carmenApril 4th, 2010 at 9:26 pm

Why is Earth Day/Earth Month is important to me? While I believe that making choices to be environmentally friendly should be an everyday occurrence and effort, I believe that it’s important to have an entire season/day/month where that point is reinforced to us as adults and especially to our children. It’s also a great time to teach the public how to reinvigorate their efforts–almost how January 1 we are encouraged to work out and eat healthy again, April 22 reminds us of what we can do for Mother Earth.

TheoApril 5th, 2010 at 1:00 am

Currently, I am recycling, using a tumbler instead of coffee cup, using a regular bag rather than paper or plastic while grocery shopping and unplugging everything in the house. I’ve also been trying to eat local foods. I hope to start focusing on a more eco-friendly wardrobe and to help my family solar panel their house for heating efficiency. Earth Month should be a year round event because this is our planet our home and this time reinforces how crucial it is for us all to join together to reduce land fill waste, deforestation, and more!

JulesApril 5th, 2010 at 11:11 am

1.) I recycle everything possible, I ride a bike instead of driving a car, we use reusable bags when shopping, we grow our own vegetables, and we compost!

2.) I would like to start using less resources this month ( taking shorter showers) and starting a city wide recycling initiative!~

3.) Earth day/Month is important to me because it opens people’s eyes to the sad state of the eco-system today! We can hopefully make people realize how important it is to recycle, use sustainable/renewable resources, an get them into the green movement!

JadeApril 5th, 2010 at 1:15 pm

1) I recycle all that I can. I reuse packaging for gifts + mail. I walk almost everywhere. I use a reusable water bottle instead of buying plastic bottled water.

2) I would like to use less electricity this month and capitalize on the longer duration of sunlight! I would also like to use less paper–difficult when studying, but possible!

3) Earth Day/Month is important to me because it allows me to take stock of the invaluable resources in our environment. It is also a reminder that we need to preserve our damaged earth for future generations who deserve to use and cherish the earth in ways past generations did not. Also, remembering the earth is just plain challenging! Thinking of ways to reduce carbon emissions, be less wasteful, and use more sustainable measures and practices is a fun way to use our brains and try to preserve our health and the health of others.

I would love to use less electricity and leave less of a carbon footstep.. I bet its easier than I think =/

Mikayla.PApril 5th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

To answer number one: As of right now, I turn off the lights when ever I leave my dorm and I recycle any chance I can get. Eventually after college I hope to start dumpster diving, I hate waste and it’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while.

JennyApril 5th, 2010 at 9:07 pm

We’ve been recycling everything – paper, cardboard, organics, glass, cans etc – for ages as our city has a great recycling program. I try to buy only eco and/or ethically sourced fashion or second hand clothes. We drink water from the tap and use cloth shopping bags and reusable bottles. We try to conserve electricity by turning off the lights when not using them. We are both very mindful about what we consume – anything we do not use we try to find a home for via craigslist or clothing swaps so that we generate as little garbage as possible. We ride our bikes everywhere and use the car only when necessary.
We are purchasing our first home this year so I would like to look into various grants and programs offered by the government to make our home an environmentally friendly one.
Earth day is important because it serves as a springboard for promoting awareness and preserving what we have for generations of tomorrow. Ideally Earth Day/Month would not need to exist as we would all be living every day by environmental principles but the baby steps that Earth day/month provides allow for change further down the road.

rebeccaApril 6th, 2010 at 12:24 am

1 – i try to compost and recycle as much as i can, and use less paper (read more on the computer!) and carpool to work…
2 – i would like to compost even more, and purchase more online at one time so that less boxes are used! :) also turn off the lights more…
3 – this is the only earth we have so we need to treat it well and protect our natural resources, particularly from needless destruction – especially for the next generation :)

Judy CondliffeApril 6th, 2010 at 1:27 am

I make usable items from existing ones – A grocery bag made from grocery bags: knit a grocery bag from strips of plastic grocery bags; attractive pocketbook from strips of magazine pages woven together

and my favorite – making beads for jewelry out of magazines/catalogues. My first one was an L L Bean necklace and earring set made from the Fall 2009 LL Bean women’s clothing catalogue. Winter catalogues work best because the photos of different fabrics gives the beads the look of texture. My favorite is one all in shades of blue – no one would ever know the beads are made of paper strips from a catalogue. I tell people that I am wearing necklace and earrings from the L L Bean catalogue and they think I purchased it from the catalogue. When I say, “I made it from the actual catalogue it opens the conversation for more ideas about re-cycling and conservation.

AbbyApril 6th, 2010 at 5:57 am

1) I recycle as much as possible and carry my fabric bags with me when shopping so I don’t use plastic bags
2) Save more electricity, water, buy more organic goods
3) We need to know how we are impacting out planet and know that we MUST do something now or else it is too late

Thanks for this!

shikiApril 6th, 2010 at 6:09 am

1. I recycle, use less plastic bags, and try to reuse water as much as i can.

KarlyeApril 6th, 2010 at 8:33 am

What are you currently doing to reduce your environmental or carbon footprint in your daily life? Ride the bus whenever possible to appointments and every day to work; take reusable grocery bags to all stores, including shops in the mall and boutiques; subscribe to a local CSA to eat locally; keep the thermostat at 60 in the winter; and recycle (our community takes plastics 1 to 7 which makes me so vey happy!)

What would you like to do better (starting this month!)? Composting. Started last summer and went dormant over the winter. I’d like to compost year round. I’d also like to install some rain barrels.

DovileApril 6th, 2010 at 8:59 am

1) I’m recycling paper (magazines and old books), and I’m also reusing plastic bags and mail packaging. I never leave lights on when I’m out.
2) I’d like to recycle plastic and glass as during the winter it was to difficult to deliver them to the recycle bins.
3) Actually, it’s not so important to me, because recycling for me is an all-year issue, but it’s a good reminder for others who don’t usually remember to recycle.

What we’re doing:
In terms of fabric. We always buy organic cotton.
We always recycle. We buy recycled products: notecards, aluminum foil, paper towels.
We use cloth bags at the supermarket.
We buy organic fruits and vegetables 6 months of the year and belong to a CSA group for the other 6 months. This allows us neighborhood and farm connections.
We walk wherever we can instead of driving or riding on public transport.
We are careful about electricity and made sure our appliances are supersavers.

What we’d like to do better:
I need to be more conscious of water. I tend to daydream as I wash dishes and let the water run until it gets cold or hot. I’m going to be more cognizant as of now.The wonderful, poignant story of The Living Tree comes to mind. The Earth truly serves us and we need to be respectful and not to abuse in order to reap its best benefits.

Earth Day is important because we take the time to celebrate our natural resources and to ponder our place on and our commitment to the earth we inhabit. It allows us to reflect and to commit ourselves to changes. Like Mother’s Day, Earth Day should be celebrated every day of the year.

I am always proud when I shop….I haven’t used plastic in almost 2 years!

I need to take shorter showers. Even though I dont shower everyday, I still could use less water

I love Earth month and all the awareness it brings. In such a relatively short time, we have done a lot of damage and it needs to stop

Lindsay {Shrimp}April 7th, 2010 at 6:37 pm

I love these thought-provoking questions, so you get all three!

1) I use natural cleansers in my home, and I try to walk or ride my bike as much as possible. I also religiously carry reusable shopping bags. They’re eco-friendly and stylish to boot! Oh, and I think my favorite is reuse, reuse, reuse – I get the vast majority of my clothes from the thrift store!
2) I would like to be a little more dedicated to that whole no-car thing. Also, I’d like to start running a little more religiously. I just did a half-marathon and would love to train for a full. I think that keeping yourself in shape is really important, even if it isn’t quiiiite earth month-esque…
3) Earth month is important to me because we can make no great strides without first getting the word out. We must all be fully aware of the consequences of our actions before we can mend our bad habits.

Kudos for being so devoted to such a wonderful cause, and thank you for sharing your views with us!!!

PauletteApril 8th, 2010 at 12:16 am

I have been very aware of environmental issues for quite some time. I am chemically sensitive, and I have learned to live naturally–no perfumes, no harsh cleaning products, no polyester fabric, no using the water here. I filter (with reverse osmosis) both drinking and shower water. And I try to use just the necessary amount of water I need.

I also am getting in the habit of not turning on any lights until the sun starts go down. It really is wasting electricity when we have free lighting all day long. I also unplug everything at night–coffee machine, radio, tv, lights, toaster. I don’t have things that need to be set so it’s not a problem, and I can save 40% of electricity by doing that.

Something I would love to do is to ask my township to start recycling. I can’t believe it isn’t mandatory, but it is not. Something else I would love to do is stop the burning of leaves in this area. In the fall people just rake them onto the road and light them. They are polluting not only the air outside, but the air in the communities homes. The smoke is so bad that it causes problems seeing when you are driving–it is a horrible and unnecessary act.

Earthday and earth month are very important to me because they give me hope that people are becoming more aware by the minute. This beautiful home we have been given needs a little tender loving care; she has provided us with all that we need; now it is our turn to show her how much we care.

SaraMMApril 8th, 2010 at 10:53 am

1) I eat a vegan diet in order to not participate in the impact raising animals for food has on the earth.
2) Buy only second hand or eco friendly clothing! I just became obsessed with this after realizing everything else in my life is organic or low impact on the earth-why not my clothes too.
3) Earth Day is important to me because we under appreciate all that the earth provides us with such as the water we need each day to survive, the vegetables on our table, and the air we breath. It helps us to pause and reflect on the bounty we have around us that does not have to do with material goods mass produced or the stressful lives we lead each day centered around jobs and money.

hsianglanApril 8th, 2010 at 6:26 pm

1) I stop using hair spray, no wood burning fire place.
2) Save water by recycle used water and save rain water for plants. cut down shower time,
turn off tap water while brushing teeth. every drop of water worth to save.
3) Earth day is important because it raise awareness to every one that the earth’s resource
will be running out soon, if no one care or protect our planet. that’s why we start to plant
trees on this day. Or for our daily life create a garden to grow our own vegetable by using
home made compose.

Jennifer HolmesApril 9th, 2010 at 11:27 am

Earth Day/Month is important to me because I am a teacher and I feel that students need to be aware of the importance of caring for the earth. We are trying to think of some great inexpensive activities for the students to do for the month. We have already planted some seeds this week. We are also very into recycling. We always make sure our class has as much in the recycling as possible. I love when kids ask if things are recyclable before they just throw it away.

WendyApril 9th, 2010 at 6:38 pm

1) I am the green team cordinator at the elementary school I work at. I help promote recycling batteries, plastic bags, cell phones, in addition to paper and the plastic water bottles and milk containers from lunch. I work with the community recycling program in order to have a successful recycling program. Additionally, I recycle paper, plastic and glass at home.
2) I try to bring a reusable cup with me whenever we go out for carry out(and to Starbucks), but I would like to get better at doing this more often. I have a whole collection of reusable grocery bags, I just need to remember to use them on a regular basis (and then I wouldn’t have to worry about recycling the plastic bags).

KimberlyApril 10th, 2010 at 12:33 am

1. I am currently driving a lot less and grouping my trips together, not using plastic water bottles, reusing gift wrap and packing or using fabric to wrap. Buying more eco-friendly products.
2. I would like to use less electricity this month, by turning off appliances when not in use and turning down the thermostat.
3. Earth Day/Month is important to me because it brings awareness to the dire environmental state our planet is currently in, and encourages people to bring about change.

LaraApril 10th, 2010 at 1:54 pm

1) Trying very hard to get convince salespeople that I don’t need five plastic bags when I shop! People use plastic bags for everything in W. Africa and it is a constant battle to convince people that I don’t need a bag or can reuse the one I brought to the store…. I think people also think I’m crazy because I use a reusable water bottle everyday….

VittoriaApril 12th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

3) Why is Earth Day/Earth Month important to you?

When I was younger, I used to tell my own parents that “Mother Earth” would get mad–like an actual mother–if we didn’t take care of her “house” (the Earth). I always cared about the environment; when a teacher in 2nd Grade told me there was a hole in the ozone layer, I had to be sent to the nurse because I began crying so much. I couldn’t sleep for weeks. As an adult, this outright fear changed into determination to make a change. I participated in beach cleanups, helped plant trees, shopped only responsible brands, recylced, reused as much as I could, made my own garden, and cut down on electricity and water usage. I’m not afraid to spread the word, and actively scold anyone who thinks being “Eco-Friendly” is just a fad.

Earth Day is a time to globally and publicly remind everyone that the Earth isn’t here for us to abuse. It’s our ability and responsibility to maintain our “home” and keep “Mother” Earth smiling.

thanks for doing your part!

RajApril 12th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

1) I recycle everything I can!

2) Conserve water by taking shorter showers.

3) Earth day helps remind me about the impact my lifestyle has on the planet.

Stephanie ToddApril 13th, 2010 at 6:17 pm

1) What are you currently doing to reduce your environmental or carbon footprint in your daily life?

In terms of living, I keep my electricity usage to a minimum. For example, I only turn the lights on when I need to pull an all-nighter, I turn off the TV before I fall asleep, and I open the blinds to let in study light! I wear warm clothing instead of keeping the heater on. I am also careful to run less water when washing dishes or brushing my teeth: turn the water off until you’re ready to use it!
In terms of shopping, I buy mostly secondhand clothing. I also bring reusable bags with me, to the grocery store or clothing store, most of the time.

In terms of transportation, I use the bus, a bike, or my feet!

2) What would you like to do better (starting this month!)

I recently succeeded in getting a compost bin for my house, where 8 people produce waste! It is a little difficult being that we are in our second week of it and still working out the logistics. I would like to help our household be more efficient at composting and recycling.

If I ever purchase a car, it will be a used car (that is great on MPG) or a hybrid.

3) Why is Earth Day/Earth Month important to you?

When I hear Earth Month, I’m reminded of elementary school days when we took time to go out and plant flowers or trees. I still haven’t forgotten the sensory details.
I think it is important for people to remember that keeping our earth clean is important for current and future generations, who deserve to reap the physical and spiritual benefits from the animal and plant life that exists on it. Wealthy nations like ours are responsible for taking the lead in environmentalism. I am fortunate to live in a green city.

HannaIsn'tApril 13th, 2010 at 9:12 pm

1) Currently, we recycle and Freecycle as much as possible. We avoid packaging in the first place and reuse until things fall apart (and can’t be repaired yet again!). We walk most everywhere, and use public transit when walking isn’t feasible. We are vegetarian/vegan and make most edibles from scratch. Our fruits and veggies come from local producers. We carefully watch our energy consumption and use renewable resources whenever we can find them.
2) We’d like to find a way to convince our apt manager to put some kind of solar collection system on the roof. It would be great to collect rainwater as well. In the meantime, I’ll be spending more time offering to help our home-owning friends reduce consumption and take less from the power grid. Free labor from friends can be a great incentive!
3) Actually, Earthday/Earthmonth is good for PR to remind us to be mindful and active, but like Black History Month, shouldn’t it be every day/month? Sometimes I’m a little bummed that it only gets press once a year for some news outlets.

CecilieApril 14th, 2010 at 1:07 pm

What am I currently doing to reduce your environmental or carbon footprint in your daily life?
I am a low income girl, which makes it difficult to pay that “little extra” for better ways to keep nature, but I never leave water running, I never have lights on in an unattended room, I Never (seriously) go anywhere by car, only public transportation. Recycling is a given, of course. I make new things out of old bits and bobs, instead of throwing them away.

2) What would I like to do better (starting this month!)?
Summertime is arriving and my broken toe is finally healing (No, I still didn’t go anywhere by car) so there will be a lot more walking and biking, my old wardrobe will be resewn into summerclothes and I will be looking into a more environmental way to get elictricity for the next wintertime, when I will hopefully afford that little extra :)

3) Why is Earth Day/Earth Month important to me?
It seems to me that many people already are taking some few extra steps for the environment, but it’s easy to slack off or simply let it slip your mind. I feel that Earth month reminds people of why they are doing these small extra thing in their daily life and that it isn’t in vain. Some people even realize that they can do more. Earth month is great, keeps my faith in mankind. :)

OksanaApril 15th, 2010 at 9:46 am

I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.
Each blade of grass,
Each honey tree,
Each bit of mud,
And stick and stone
Is blood and muscle,
Skin and bone.

And just as I
Need every bit
Of me to make
My body fit,
So Earth needs
Grass and stone and tree
And things that grow here
Naturally.

That’s why we
Celebrate this day.
That’s why across
The world we say:
As long as life,
As dear, as free,
I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.

I cant say better than this poem. I love Mother Nature by all my heart, and try to do the all my best to save it and do not harm.

JosephaApril 22nd, 2010 at 10:16 am

earth day is important to me becasue it’s also my birthday. I make sure all the lights in my home are turned off. I make sure I recycle and use a nalgene water bottle instead of buying bottled water

1. I recycle, shop with reusable grocery bags, and turn the lights off when I’m not at home!

2. I’m going to try to take shorter showers and use less water while washing dishes.

3. I heard a great quote today: “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”

To reduce my environmental footprint I hang clothing outside to dry in the warmer months, use the washing machine only when I have a full load, unplug electronic devices that are not in use (ie. DVD/CD player, radio), recycle as much as possible, compost fruit/vegetable peelings.

I would like to improve on my water usage such as taking shorter showers and washing more clothing in cold water only.
